Education in Nigeria, like other communities in Africa, has two problems. First, the quality is not very good. Students struggle through primary and secondary education and at the end may not have the required grades to move on to the university. The Nigerian newspaper, Daily Trust, reported that 70% of students that took the November/December 2013 West African Examination Council exams failed.
Secondly, many students graduate from the university having studied any course the university would give them, even if it does not interest them. Even so, they may remain unemployed or underemployed. It is not uncommon to see an engineering graduate working as a bank clerk.
Since many grew up believing they are supposed to get a job- mostly from the government- or go through tertiary education to have a better life, youths may remain unemployed for 4-6 years awaiting university admission or a job.
